Sanremo extraordinary urban hygiene plan for the summer season

Sanremo extraordinary urban hygiene plan for the summer season

With the arrival of the summer season and a significant increase in the city’s population driven by seaside tourism and the return to second homes, Sanremo is preparing to address key issues related to urban cleanliness and decorum. A new extraordinary urban hygiene plan, announced by Councillor for the Environment Ester Moscato, is in its final stages and will be officially presented in the coming days.

Strengthening cleaning activities and monitoring illegal dumping

The initiative aims to strengthen city-wide cleaning activities, increasing the frequency of street and sidewalk washing and the cleaning of areas around recycling islands, while also reinforcing actions against illegal waste dumping, which typically rises during the summer months. Alongside the established presence of the Rangers d’Italia, the Municipality plans to engage an external company to monitor and intervene during less supervised time slots.

Councillor Ester Moscato’s hands-on approach

In her first year in office within the Mager administration, Councillor Moscato adopted a hands-on approach to fine-tune the new plan. “Last week,” she explained, “I travelled across much of the municipal area by scooter to personally verify the most critical situations reported by residents. I specifically requested an increase in washing activities, but above all that they be carried out with care and rigour. As regards illegal dumping, I asked for the operational support of a private company that will soon begin patrolling sensitive areas, especially during hours not covered by the Rangers. The objective is twofold: to safeguard urban decorum and to respond concretely to residents’ concerns.”

AMAIE Energia e Servizi support for municipal measures

Support for the municipal measures also comes from AMAIE Energia e Servizi, the municipal company responsible for urban hygiene in Sanremo. Contacted on the matter, President Sergio Tommasini stated: “We are working in close coordination with Councillor Ester Moscato, municipal offices and our technical teams to strengthen our summer presence across the city. We will also engage with trade associations. An intensified operational plan has been prepared for the most critical months of the year.”

Key priorities: illegal dumping and smart eco-islands

Appointed by Sanremo Mayor Alessandro Mager, Tommasini outlined the main priorities: “There are two key areas of action. On the one hand, tackling illegal waste dumping, which according to company estimates amounts to approximately 2,200–2,500 tonnes per year, with significant impacts in terms of urban degradation and costs for the community. On the other hand, the introduction of smart eco-islands, an innovation set to profoundly change citizens’ habits regarding separate waste collection. We will face new challenges, such as shifts in disposal patterns, the possible emergence of new dumping hotspots and new forms of TARI evasion. This is a deep cultural change that will require time and cooperation.”

Summer operational goals and citizen engagement

Tommasini concluded on the summer plan: “The goal is clear: to maximize washing and sanitisation activities and to increase operational responsiveness in cases of illegal dumping, especially in the most frequented areas.” AMAIE also stressed the importance of the relationship with residents: “Our Public Relations Office handles an average of over 620 reports per month, a figure that demonstrates the active involvement of citizens and our commitment to providing timely and effective responses.”
