Expired medicines
Across the municipal area, expired medicines can be disposed of in special maroon-coloured containers placed in front of pharmacies and near certain specialised healthcare facilities.
Expired medicines may be disposed of in the designated containers every day of the week, without time restrictions. Please avoid using bags to collect them.
There are some restrictions and precautions to follow when disposing of this type of waste:
- The collection of expired medicines concerns only the medicines themselves, not their packaging and/or package leaflets, which are generally paper/cardboard and should be disposed of accordingly.
- Glass or plastic containers (e.g. for syrups) must be disposed of in the corresponding recycling bin.
- Empty plastic/metal blister packs for tablets can be disposed of in the plastic collection.
- Any accessories included in the packaging (measuring spoons, caps, droppers) must be disposed of separately in the residual waste collection.
- Food supplements should not be disposed of with expired medicines, as they are not medicines.
- Disinfectants, sphygmomanometers, syringes and other sharp or pointed medical devices (e.g. razor blades, IV cannulas, disposable scalpels with protective covers) are not medicines and must be disposed of following specific rules—not in the expired medicines bin.
- Spray cans or pressurised containers of certain medicines cannot be disposed of in the expired medicines bin. Some of the above-mentioned items can go in the residual waste collection, while others must be taken to the collection centre.
