Santo Stefano al Mare awarded by RICREA for steel packaging recycling

Santo Stefano al Mare awarded by RICREA for steel packaging recycling

RICREA has recognized Santo Stefano al Mare as a leading example of excellence in steel packaging recycling. The award was presented during the Ligurian stop of the travelling campaign “Cuore Mediterraneo” and highlights the commitment of the municipality, local residents and AMAIE Energia e Servizi to promoting the circular economy.

Over the years, Santo Stefano al Mare has achieved strong recycling results and continues to stand out as one of the most environmentally conscious communities in the area. The recognition from RICREA, the Italian National Consortium for Steel Packaging Recycling and Recovery, confirms the value of the work carried out across the territory.

The initiative aims to raise awareness among residents and tourists about the importance of proper waste separation, especially during the summer season when coastal destinations experience a significant increase in visitors. In 2026, Santo Stefano al Mare is expected to collect approximately 1.2 tonnes of steel packaging, marking a 2.3% increase compared to the previous year.

The award ceremony took place at Porticciolo L’Ancora. In addition to the municipality, RICREA also recognized AMAIE Energia e Servizi, which manages waste collection services in the area, and Riviera Recuperi, the facility responsible for sorting and sending collected materials for recycling.

A result built on teamwork

“We are extremely proud to have contributed to this achievement,” said Dr. Ramoino, member of the Board of Directors of AMAIE Energia e Servizi. “Citizens’ commitment to proper waste separation, combined with a reliable and well targeted collection service, forms the foundation of this success. These efforts are supported by the sorting and recovery activities carried out throughout the recycling chain. Together, they demonstrate how sustainability can become a measurable and concrete reality.”

Santo Stefano sets an example for the entire area

AMAIE Energia e Servizi General Manager Luca Pesce also highlighted the importance of the recognition.

“Santo Stefano al Mare represents a true excellence. The municipality has achieved outstanding recycling rates for many years. Steel packaging collection is one of its strongest results and is carried out through the multi material collection system together with plastic. We later extended this model across the entire service area managed by AMAIE Energia e Servizi. Today all 18 municipalities served by the company use this system, but Santo Stefano al Mare was among the first to introduce it.”

His remarks underline the pioneering role played by the municipality in implementing a collection model that has helped improve recycling performance throughout the wider area.

Steel recycling supports the circular economy

Steel packaging is a valuable resource for the circular economy. Food cans, containers, caps and aerosol cans can be recycled 100% and indefinitely without losing quality.

The recognition awarded by RICREA confirms the effectiveness of the daily work carried out by citizens, local authorities and waste management operators. This shared commitment reduces waste, recovers valuable raw materials and contributes directly to environmental protection.

For AMAIE Energia e Servizi, the award represents further motivation to continue promoting recycling awareness and improving waste collection services across the 18 municipalities it serves.
