Smart Eco Islands are coming: waste collection is changing

AMAIE Energia e Servizi is launching the final phase of the PNRR project (M2C1.1.11.1) Line A, focusing on strengthening separate waste collection through the installation of smart Eco Islands. Following the works already completed in Pietrabruna, Civezza, Badalucco and Taggia, AMAIE Energia e Servizi will install the new Eco-Islands in Sanremo, Terzorio and Santo Stefano al Mare from 15 December 2025 to 31 May 2026.

Widespread communication for citizens

The installation phase will be supported by a targeted communication plan designed to inform citizens about how to use the new smart equipment. Communication will be delivered through updates on the Junker app, the AMAIE website and social media pages, as well as dedicated information materials, leaflets and flyers delivered directly to the users concerned.

Innovation and sustainability

The new smart Eco Islands will allow waste to be disposed of in a flexible way, 24 hours a day, and in a traceable manner. This will support more effective and higher-quality separate waste collection. The project marks a significant step towards more efficient and sustainable waste management, in line with national environmental objectives.

Zone A and the start of installations in Sanremo

In Sanremo, the installation of the smart Eco-Islands will follow a gradual approach, starting with Zone A, which includes the most densely populated areas of the city. In this first phase, AMAIE will focus on via Pietro Agosti and the section of via Galileo Galilei connecting the Borgo area to Polo Nord square, where the first nine stations will be installed.

From Monday 15 December, delivery and installation activities will begin across the area. Users will be able to use the Eco-Island closest to their home. However, the system will also allow access to any other station along the same street or within the same homogeneous area, ensuring greater flexibility when disposing of waste.

During the first weeks, the service will operate in a trial phase alongside the door-to-door system. Access will initially be free. Users will simply need to press the button on the Eco-Island and follow the instructions shown on the display to open the correct compartment. Once users are familiar with the system and after collection frequencies have been fine-tuned, AMAIE will progressively replace the door-to-door service. This phase will include the removal of remaining waste containers and the activation of access through user recognition.

The Eco-Islands will be available 24 hours a day, with no time limits or collection schedules. This will make waste disposal easier and more compatible with everyday needs. Respect for residents’ rest remains essential, particularly by avoiding glass disposal during night hours. AMAIE will in any case ensure the collection of all waste fractions in accordance with the municipal ordinance.

Each station will also be equipped with a video surveillance system, designed to monitor waste disposal and counter illegal dumping, helping to protect urban decorum.

Access cards and dedicated information for users

Access cards for the Eco-Islands will be delivered through personalised postal distribution to the addresses of users registered in the TARI database of the Municipality of Sanremo. This approach will also ensure delivery to non-resident users, who will find the badge directly in their mailbox upon arrival in the city, avoiding inconvenience or forgetfulness.

Inside the envelope, marked with the logos of AMAIE Energia e Servizi and the Municipality of Sanremo, users will also find an information flyer. The material will explain how the Eco-Islands work, outline the correct disposal procedures and include a map of the area showing the locations and addresses of each station, for quick and clear reference.

Updates and ongoing communication

Progress on the installation of the smart Eco Islands will be communicated step by step directly on this page, which will be regularly updated with dates, affected areas and operational instructions. To stay fully informed about the project’s development and how to use the new facilities, users can also follow the Amaie Igiene Urbana social media channels (Facebook and Instagram).
