Smart Eco Islands are coming: waste collection is changing

AMAIE Energia e Servizi launches the final phase of the PNRR project (M2C1.1.11.1) – Line A, focusing on strengthening separate waste collection through the installation of smart Eco-islands.
Following the works already completed in the municipalities of Pietrabruna, Civezza, Badalucco and Taggia, the project now enters its operational phase in the areas of Sanremo, Terzorio and Santo Stefano al Mare, with installation activities scheduled from 15 December 2025 to 31 May 2026.

Widespread communication to residents

The installation activities are supported by a targeted communication plan. Its goal is to provide residents with clear and timely information on how to use the new smart facilities. First, communication is delivered through updates on the Junker app. In addition, information is shared on the AMAIE Energia e Servizi website and social media channels. Furthermore, dedicated notices and printed materials are delivered directly to the households concerned.

Innovation and sustainability

The smart Eco-islands enable flexible and traceable waste disposal, operating 24 hours a day. This improves the effectiveness and quality of separate waste collection. The project represents a significant step towards more efficient and sustainable waste management, in line with national environmental objectives and circular economy strategies.

The absence of time restrictions or collection schedules allows residents to dispose of waste more easily and in a way that fits everyday needs. Respect for others’ rest remains essential, particularly by avoiding glass disposal during night-time hours. Each station integrates a video surveillance system that monitors disposal activities and helps prevent illegal dumping, contributing to the protection of urban decorum. AMAIE ensures the collection of all waste fractions in accordance with the municipal ordinance.

Zone A and start of installations in Sanremo

The installation of smart Eco-islands in Sanremo follows a progressive approach, starting with Zone A, which includes some of the city’s most densely populated areas. In this initial phase, AMAIE Energia e Servizi focused interventions along Via Pietro Agosti and the section of Via Galileo Galilei running from Borgo to Piazza del Polo Nord, where the first nine stations have been installed.

Delivery and installation activities began on Monday, 15 December. The Eco-islands became operational on 26 January, during an initial start-up phase with free access, allowing users to become familiar with the new system.
From 2 March, access to the Eco-islands in Zone A has been regulated through an enabled access card. Users can dispose of waste at the Eco-island closest to their home, with the option to access other stations along the same street or within the same homogeneous area.

During the initial phase, the service operates alongside the door-to-door collection system. Once the start-up phase is completed and emptying frequencies have been calibrated, AMAIE will proceed with the progressive replacement of the traditional service, removing remaining bins and fully activating the access recognition system.

A dedicated information flyer is available for Zone A, including instructions on how to use the Eco-islands and a map of the area showing station locations and addresses. The material has been delivered to the households concerned by mail and is also available digitally.

Zone B: start of installations from February 2026

From February 2026, the installation phase for Zone B has begun. By 20 February 2026, new fixed smart Eco-islands will be installed along Via Martiri della Libertà and in the two sections of Via Galileo Galilei involved in the project extension.

As in Zone A, activation in Zone B will take place progressively, starting with an initial operational phase and followed by access regulation via enabled access cards, according to the same procedures.
Households concerned will receive a dedicated information flyer, including instructions for correct waste disposal and a map of the area showing station locations and addresses.

Access cards and dedicated user information

Access to the smart Eco-islands is provided through an enabled access card. First, AMAIE Energia e Servizi delivers the card by personalised postal distribution to users registered in the TARI database of the Municipality of Sanremo. In addition, the system ensures delivery to non-resident users. They will find the card directly in their mailbox upon arrival in the city. As a result, inconvenience or forgotten access credentials are avoided. Inside the envelope, marked with the logos of AMAIE Energia e Servizi and the Municipality of Sanremo, AMAIE includes dedicated information materials. In particular, these materials explain how the Eco-islands work and outline the correct disposal procedures. Moreover, the documentation includes maps of the areas concerned, showing the locations and addresses of the stations. Finally, AMAIE tailors the content according to the activation zones, providing users with clear and immediately useful information.

Project updates and ongoing communication

The progress of the smart Eco-island installations will be communicated step by step on this page. The content will be regularly updated with dates, affected areas and operational instructions. In addition, to stay informed about the project’s development and the use of the new facilities, users can follow the Amaie Igiene Urbana social media channels (Facebook and Instagram).
