Smart Eco Islands are coming: waste collection is changing

AMAIE Energia e Servizi launches the final phase of the PNRR project (M2C1.1.11.1) Line A, focusing on improving waste sorting through the installation of smart Eco-Islands.

After successful installations in the municipalities of Pietrabruna, Civezza, Badalucco and Taggia, the project now enters the operational phase. Work now moves to Sanremo and Santo Stefano al Mare, with installations scheduled between 15 December 2025 and 31 May 2026.

Clear information for residents

At the same time, AMAIE supports the installation with a targeted communication plan. The goal is simple: help residents understand how to use the new smart equipment.

Information reaches citizens through several channels. These include updates on the Junker app, the AMAIE website and the company’s social media pages. In addition, dedicated notices and printed materials are delivered directly to households in the affected areas.

Innovation and sustainability

Smart Eco-Islands allow flexible and traceable waste disposal, available 24 hours a day. As a result, waste sorting becomes easier and more efficient.

At the same time, the project supports a more sustainable waste management system. It aligns with national environmental targets and promotes the principles of the circular economy.

Because there are no fixed schedules or collection calendars, residents can dispose of waste at a time that suits their daily routine. However, respect for neighbors remains essential. In particular, glass should not be disposed of during night hours.

Each Eco-Island includes a video surveillance system. This helps monitor waste disposal and prevent illegal dumping, while also protecting urban cleanliness. AMAIE ensures the collection of all waste fractions according to municipal regulations.

Zone A: the first installations in Sanremo

The installation of smart Eco-Islands in Sanremo follows a gradual plan. The project begins with Zone A, one of the most densely populated areas of the city.

In this first phase, AMAIE installed the first nine Eco-Islands along Via Pietro Agosti and along the section of Via Galileo Galilei connecting Borgo to Piazza del Polo Nord.

Delivery and installation started on Monday 15 December. The Eco-Islands became operational on 26 January.

Initially, the system operated with free access. This allowed residents to become familiar with the new technology. From 2 March, Eco-Islands in Zone A remain accessible in open access mode, meaning no card is required.

Residents can use the Eco-Island closest to their home. They may also use other stations along the same street or within the same area.

During the initial phase, the service operated alongside the door-to-door waste collection system. Once the start-up phase ended and emptying frequencies were calibrated, AMAIE gradually replaced the traditional system. Existing containers were removed and the full recognition system was activated.

For Zone A, residents receive a dedicated information flyer. It includes instructions for using the Eco-Islands and a map showing all locations and addresses. The flyer is delivered by mail and is also available in digital format.

Zone B: installations starting in February 2026

From February 2026, installation work began in Zone B.

By 20 February 2026, new smart fixed Eco-Islands will be installed in Via Martiri della Libertà and in two sections of Via Galileo Galilei included in the project extension.

As with Zone A, the system will start with a free access phase. This transition period allows residents to learn how the system works. Households in the area receive a dedicated flyer. It explains the correct waste disposal procedures and includes a detailed map of Eco-Island locations.

Zone C: Eco-Islands activated from 17 March

The project continues with the extension of the system to Zone C of Sanremo. Activation of the new Eco-Islands is scheduled from 17 March 2026.

The new stations will be installed in the area between Via Borgo Tinasso, Via Dante Alighieri, Via Zeffiro Massa, Via Alessandro Volta, Via Goethe and Via Peirogallo. This step further expands the service across the city.

As in the previous zones, a free access start-up phase is planned. This allows residents to become familiar with the new system and the correct waste disposal procedures.

Residents will also receive a dedicated flyer with instructions and a map of the Eco-Island locations. The material is delivered by mail and available online.

Continuous updates and communication

Progress on the installation of smart Eco-Islands will be updated step by step on this page. Each update will include new dates, affected areas and operational instructions.

To stay informed about the project and learn how to use the new system, residents can also follow AMAIE Igiene Urbana social media channels (Facebook and Instagram).
