Santo Stefano al Mare awarded by RICREA for steel packaging recycling

Santo Stefano al Mare awarded by RICREA for steel packaging recycling

RICREA has recognized Santo Stefano al Mare as a leading example of excellence in steel packaging recycling. The award was presented during the Ligurian stop of the travelling campaign “Cuore Mediterraneo” and highlights the commitment of the municipality, local residents and AMAIE Energia e Servizi to promoting the circular economy.

Over the years, Santo Stefano al Mare has achieved strong recycling results and continues to stand out as one of the most environmentally conscious communities in the area. The recognition from RICREA, the Italian National Consortium for Steel Packaging Recycling and Recovery, confirms the value of the work carried out across the territory.

The initiative aims to raise awareness among residents and tourists about the importance of proper waste separation, especially during the summer season when coastal destinations experience a significant increase in visitors. In 2026, Santo Stefano al Mare is expected to collect approximately 1.2 tonnes of steel packaging, marking a 2.3% increase compared to the previous year.

The award ceremony took place at Porticciolo L’Ancora. In addition to the municipality, RICREA also recognized AMAIE Energia e Servizi, which manages waste collection services in the area, and Riviera Recuperi, the facility responsible for sorting and sending collected materials for recycling.

A result built on teamwork

“We are extremely proud to have contributed to this achievement,” said Dr. Ramoino, member of the Board of Directors of AMAIE Energia e Servizi. “Citizens’ commitment to proper waste separation, combined with a reliable and well targeted collection service, forms the foundation of this success. These efforts are supported by the sorting and recovery activities carried out throughout the recycling chain. Together, they demonstrate how sustainability can become a measurable and concrete reality.”

Santo Stefano sets an example for the entire area

AMAIE Energia e Servizi General Manager Luca Pesce also highlighted the importance of the recognition.

“Santo Stefano al Mare represents a true excellence. The municipality has achieved outstanding recycling rates for many years. Steel packaging collection is one of its strongest results and is carried out through the multi material collection system together with plastic. We later extended this model across the entire service area managed by AMAIE Energia e Servizi. Today all 18 municipalities served by the company use this system, but Santo Stefano al Mare was among the first to introduce it.”

His remarks underline the pioneering role played by the municipality in implementing a collection model that has helped improve recycling performance throughout the wider area.

Steel recycling supports the circular economy

Steel packaging is a valuable resource for the circular economy. Food cans, containers, caps and aerosol cans can be recycled 100% and indefinitely without losing quality.

The recognition awarded by RICREA confirms the effectiveness of the daily work carried out by citizens, local authorities and waste management operators. This shared commitment reduces waste, recovers valuable raw materials and contributes directly to environmental protection.

For AMAIE Energia e Servizi, the award represents further motivation to continue promoting recycling awareness and improving waste collection services across the 18 municipalities it serves.

EcoRevolution: students take the lead in recycling with AMAIE Energia e Servizi

EcoRevolution: students take the lead in recycling with AMAIE Energia e Servizi

Born from the collaboration between AMAIE Energia e Servizi and the Cristoforo Colombo Institute of Sanremo, the project “EcoRevolution: We Make the Difference” engaged students from class 5B ITI in a hands on educational experience focused on environmental sustainability. The initiative centered on recycling, waste separation and the promotion of responsible environmental behaviors.

Students discover the journey of waste

The project came to life on March 30, 2026, with a visit to the headquarters of AMAIE Energia e Servizi. During the meeting, company staff presented how waste collection services operate. They explained the rules of waste separation, illustrated the journey of materials after disposal and explored the principles that guide recycling and resource recovery. Students had the opportunity to observe first hand the daily work required to provide an efficient and sustainable service. The experience also helped them understand how citizens’ choices directly influence the quality of recycling results.

Six topics to tell the story of recycling

Following the visit, the students developed the project content by working in groups dedicated to the main waste categories. Through research, discussion and writing activities, they created informative content focused on paper, glass, plastic, organic waste, residual waste and the Ecocentro recycling facility. Each group explored the lifecycle of materials and their transformation through recycling. The students showed how proper waste separation can turn waste into a valuable resource for the community.

Seven videos to raise community awareness

The project led to the production of seven videos. Alongside a backstage documentary covering the different stages of the initiative, the students created six thematic videos dedicated to paper, glass, plastic, organic waste, residual waste and the Ecocentro. Each video clearly explains the importance of proper waste separation and highlights the value of recycling for the environment and the circular economy.

In addition, the project enabled students to develop technical, communication and digital skills. They worked as a team and took part in a real initiative designed for the community. In this way, they became active participants in an environmental education project aimed at the entire local area.

A project that brings school and community together

“We strongly believe in the partnership between schools and companies to create practical educational experiences connected to the local community. Our goal is to encourage young people to embrace sustainability and environmental responsibility, making them active participants through dialogue and direct engagement with the community,” said Sergio Tommasini, President of AMAIE Energia e Servizi.

A similar view was expressed by Lucia Jacona, Principal of the Cristoforo Colombo Institute, who highlighted the educational value of the initiative and the importance of strengthening collaboration between schools and local organizations to provide students with increasingly practical and meaningful experiences.

The videos will be published on the communication channels of AMAIE Energia e Servizi. Through the content created by the students, the EcoRevolution project will help raise awareness among citizens and families about recycling, waste separation and proper waste management. The initiative confirms the importance of collaboration between schools and local stakeholders in promoting environmental awareness and encouraging responsible behavior throughout the community.

Smart Eco-Islands are coming: waste collection is changing

Smart Eco-Islands are coming: waste collection is changing

AMAIE Energia e Servizi has launched the final phase of the PNRR project (M2C1.1.11.1) Line A, aimed at strengthening separate waste collection through the installation of smart Eco-islands.
Following the interventions already completed in the municipalities of Pietrabruna, Civezza, Badalucco and Taggia, the project has now entered the operational phase involving the areas of Sanremo and Santo Stefano al Mare. Installation activities, scheduled from December 15, 2025 to May 31, 2026, are now nearing completion.

Widespread communication to citizens

At the same time, AMAIE supports the rollout with a targeted communication plan. The aim is to inform citizens clearly and effectively about how to use the new smart systems. In particular, updates are shared through the Junker app, the official website and social media channels. In addition, dedicated materials and printed leaflets are delivered directly to users.

Innovation and sustainability

Smart Eco-islands allow flexible and traceable waste disposal, available 24 hours a day. As a result, they improve both efficiency and quality in separate waste collection.

Moreover, the project supports a more sustainable waste management system. It also aligns with national environmental goals and circular economy strategies. There are no time limits or collection schedules. Therefore, citizens can dispose of waste more easily and according to their daily routines. However, respect for others remains essential. For example, glass disposal during nighttime should be avoided. Each station includes a video surveillance system. This helps monitor disposal and prevent illegal dumping. As a result, it protects urban cleanliness. At the same time, AMAIE ensures proper collection of all waste fractions, in line with municipal regulations.

Zone A and the start of installations in Sanremo

First, the rollout starts from Zone A, one of the most densely populated areas of the city. AMAIE focuses on via Pietro Agosti and the section of via Galileo Galilei connecting Borgo to piazza del Polo Nord. Installation activities begin onDecember 15. Then, the Eco-islands become operational on January 12 with open access. This initial phase allows users to get familiar with the system.

Initially, access is open and does not require a card. However, from April 13, 2026, only authorized users with a badge can access the system. Users can dispose of waste at the nearest Eco-island. At the same time, they can also use other stations within the same area.

During the first phase, the system operates alongside door-to-door collection. Then, AMAIE calibrates emptying frequencies. Finally, it replaces the traditional service. Existing bins are removed and the access system becomes fully active. For Zone A, a dedicated flyer is available. It includes instructions and a map with station locations. Users receive the material by post and can also access it online.

Zone B: installations from February 2026

Then, in February 2026, the project moves to Zone B. By February 20, new smart Eco-islands are installed in via Martiri della Libertà and in the remaining sections of via Galileo Galilei.

Again, activation follows a progressive approach. First, the system starts with open access. This allows users to become familiar with the new service. At the same time, users receive a dedicated flyer with instructions and a detailed map of the area.

Zone C: Eco-islands from March 17

Next, the project expands to additional areas of Sanremo. From March 17, 2026, new Eco-islands are installed in via Borgo Tinasso, via Dante Alighieri, via Zefiro Massa, via Alessandro Volta, via W. Goethe and via Peirogallo. As in previous phases, the service starts with an open-access period. This phase begins on March 30, 2026 and helps users learn how to use the system correctly.

Also in this case, users receive a dedicated flyer with instructions and a map. The material is delivered by post and is also available online. Currently, the service operates differently across areas.

In Zone 7, including via Pietro Agosti, via Galileo Galilei, via Martiri della Libertà and strada Borgo Tinasso, Eco-islands are active from April 13, 2026 with badge access.

In contrast, in Zone 6, including via Dante Alighieri, via Zefiro Massa, via Alessandro Volta, via Goethe and via Peirogallo, Eco-islands remain temporarily in open mode. They are accessible without a badge until distribution is completed. Meanwhile, on-site signs inform users about activation timelines.

Zone C: Eco-islands from April 20

Furthermore, the project continues with the fourth phase starting from April 20, 2026. Installations move from west to east, covering Coldirodi, the Foce area, San Martino and Poggio. To reduce disruption, operations take place at night. Parking restrictions start from April 17 and are gradually removed. Therefore, citizens are asked to follow signage and keep areas clear.

As before, the service starts with open access. Users can use the Eco-islands without a badge during the initial phase. Then, once card distribution is complete, access becomes restricted and door-to-door collection is progressively replaced. Users receive communication by post. This includes the access badge, instructions and a map of the area.

Zone D: Santo Stefano al Mare: smart Ecoislands active from May

The Fixed Ecoislands are smart collection points designed for clean, organised and traceable separate waste disposal. Access doors can only be opened using a personal magnetic card. Waste disposal is permitted from 5:00 PM on the day before collection until 6:00 AM on the scheduled collection day.

Zone D: Ecoisland collection calendar

Unlike other areas of the territory, the Ecoislands in Santo Stefano al Mare will follow different collection rules depending on the type of waste. Organic waste can always be disposed of. Plastic, paper and unsorted waste must follow the municipal collection calendar. Different schedules will apply during the standard period and the high season.

The standard period runs from January 1 to June 14 and from September 16 to December 31. Christmas and Easter holidays are excluded. Plastic waste can be disposed of on Tuesdays. Unsorted waste on Thursdays. Paper collection will take place on Saturdays.

The high season runs from June 15 to September 15, including Christmas and Easter holiday periods. During this period, plastic waste can be disposed of on Tuesdays and Fridays. Unsorted waste on Mondays and Thursdays. Paper collection will continue on Saturdays.

The two Ecoislands installed in the area will have different configurations. The station located at Porto degli Aregai includes external glass containers. This means glass can be disposed of freely without using the Ecoisland access system. At the Lungomare Cristoforo Colombo station, the glass container is integrated inside the smart Ecoisland structure. Disposal will therefore require the personal access card, as already предусмотрено for organic waste.

Users involved in the new system are receiving dedicated communications by post. The package includes the enabled access card, information material, instructions for correct Ecoisland use and a map showing the location and addresses of the collection stations.

Proper waste disposal

At this stage, correct waste disposal becomes essential. Since Eco-islands are available every day, there is no need to store large amounts of waste. Therefore, users should avoid oversized or overfilled bags. These cannot be inserted properly and may be left outside the stations.

In addition, forcing large bags into the compartments can block the system. This may damage the mechanisms and make the Eco-island unusable. Instead, users should distribute waste over time. This improves efficiency and ensures proper use of the system. To support this transition, smaller bags are available at the Distribution Office.

Continuous updates and communication

Progress on the installation of smart Eco-Islands will be updated step by step on this page. Each update will include new dates, affected areas and operational instructions. To stay informed about the project and learn how to use the new system, residents can also follow AMAIE Igiene Urbana social media channels (Facebook and Instagram).

Electric street sweeper test in Sanremo

Electric street sweeper test in Sanremo

AMAIE Energia e Servizi recently hosted an operational testing session of an electric street sweeper in Sanremo.

Testing across different urban contexts

The trial involved several areas of the city, including the town centre, the seafront and zones with more complex road layouts. The aim was to assess the vehicle’s effectiveness in real conditions, evaluating its performance both on main roads and in narrower spaces such as alleys and cycle paths. Thanks to its compact size and manoeuvrability, the sweeper proved capable of adapting well even to articulated urban environments, enabling targeted and continuous operations.

Electric technology and sustainability

The tested vehicle is fully electric, with zero emissions and low noise impact, making it particularly suitable for urban use.

A path towards service innovation

This activity is part of an ongoing process of updating and improving urban hygiene services, with the aim of identifying increasingly efficient and sustainable solutions for the area. The test provided a valuable opportunity to evaluate new technologies applied to street cleaning, in line with the needs of a complex and dynamic city like Sanremo.

Dog waste bins in Sanremo: new installations underway

Dog waste bins in Sanremo: new installations underway

In Sanremo, the installation of new bins dedicated to dog waste has begun. The intervention focuses in particular on areas with higher population density and aims to make the service more efficient and accessible for residents and tourists.

A simpler and more recognizable service

The new bins are easy to identify. They are yellow and feature a paw-shaped opening. Each station also includes a bag dispenser. This allows dog owners to dispose of waste correctly, even when they do not have the necessary materials with them.

The goal is clear: improve the quality of waste collection and reduce improper disposal. Bags should no longer be left near glass recycling bins or placed in unsuitable litter bins. This behavior compromises urban cleanliness and reduces the efficiency of the collection system.

A step forward for a cleaner city

The initiative aims to provide a concrete service and improve the livability of public spaces. Proper use of the bins is essential. They are intended exclusively for dog waste and not for household waste.

Highlighting the value of the initiative, Environment Councillor Ester Moscato stated: “With this initiative, we are taking a step forward towards a cleaner, more citizen-friendly city. I would like to thank AMAIE Energia e Servizi and the environmental offices: their commitment has made it possible to respond to a specific need of the community. We rely on the civic sense of residents and tourists for the responsible use of these dedicated bins. Please note that they are intended exclusively for dog waste and not for household waste.”

Disposal guidelines

In areas where the new bins are not yet available, standard litter bins can still be used. Dog waste is classified as non-recyclable waste.

The installation of the new bins represents a concrete action to improve urban cleanliness and promote responsible behavior. AMAIE Energia e Servizi, together with citizens, works every day towards a cleaner and more sustainable city.
